Marine et Cavalerie or Navy and Cavalry, created by the very renowned Hermès artist, Philippe Ledoux (1903-1975), who was engaged by Robert Dumas in 1947 to design for the Maison de Hermès. His amazing talents as an artist and illustrator can be enjoyed in the 90 carrés that he had created during his tenure at the design house. Many of Ledoux’s Hermès creations had equestrian or naval themes, and his Marine et Cavalerie, first issued by Hermès in 1967, combined both. The design, created to commemorate the capture of the Dutch fleet at Den Helder on the night of 23 January 1795 by the 8th Hussar Regiment and the 15th Line Infantry Regiment of the French Revolutionary Army. The Hussar regiment surrounded a Dutch fleet frozen at anchor in the Nieuwe Diep, just east of the town of Den Helder. After a charge across the frozen Zuiderzee, the French cavalry captured all 14 Dutch warships lying at anchor. A capture of ships by horsemen is an extremely rare feat in military history. Also, it as a bloodless victory, as there were no causalities on either side, and the French returned all the ships to the Dutch in May of 1795, after an indemnity payment of 100 million guilders.

This design was reissued by Hermès as part of the 1990 Fall - Winter collection. and the Hermès copyright (see, photo 9) dates this scarf as a 1990 issue. The design has a lettered title (see, photo 5) and is signed by the artist (see, photo 8).

The rich colorway is comprised of a crimson red and gold border surrounding design details rendered in white, French rose, Paris green, gold, silver, pewter, camel, and burnt umber.
